An organic mattress is unlike other mattresses. Soma Organic Mattresses is not your typical mattress store. Our store and our products are just as unique as each one of our clients that walk through our doors.
Our products rely on the highest quality organic cotton, organic sheep’s wool, organic rubber (sap from a tree) and renewable, natural wood. Combined and handcrafted in places such as Canada, the USA and Europe, all of these materials come together to create the perfect sleep product for you.
Ultimately, what distinguishes a Soma Organic product, or any of the products that we showcase comes down to the quality and characteristics in materials that we use to create the final product.
Sleep is the natural foundation of a happy, healthy body.

What Are Organic Materials, & Why Use Them?
What makes a material organic is not only the fact that is comes from a natural source, for example: wool from a sheep, but that there is a quality, third-party organizing that is independent and will certify the materials used in manufacturing.
Our life is often heavily impacted by the time and quality of our nightly sleep. Most of our repair and growth happens during the time when our body, and mind, is able to rest and repair. Modern mattresses and sleep products contain components that affect the quality of our sleep, or body’s temperature regulation during the sleep cycle and can be harmful to our skin and immune system. Moving towards living a healthy and balanced life means that we must focus on the foundation – sleep and the environment in which we sleep.
When you select an organic mattress with Soma, you are choosing a mattress: made to higher standards, made with flexibility in comfort (through customization) and also great value for your money. Our expert team has carefully and deliberately hand-selected the best available mattresses and bedroom products with your health and lifestyle in-mind.
Below you can find more information about the most commonly used materials in our products.
Organic Latex (Natural Rubber)
Natural rubber is a sap that is derived from the “rubber” tree, and is the foundation of many of our mattresses and pillows. Unlike conventional mattresses that use a combination of coils, memory foam and harmful glues, rubber also referred to as latex, is a natural product that is non-harmful and does not off-gas.
Our mattresses are made with premium organic rubber, that is carefully harvested by tapping the sap (milk) of rubber trees in countries such as Sri Lanka and Malaysia. After the sap is collected, we mold and bake the spa into sheets or rubber, without the use of chemical preservatives and stabilizers before they arrive in Canada for use.
Benefits of Rubber: Optimal comfort and durability due to it’s elasticity, molding to pressure points on the body while offering support, temperature and moisture regulation and circulation and naturally anti-bacterial / anti-microbial and anti-allergenic.
Organic Wool
Wool has been used, traditionally, for hundreds and thousands of years by cultures all over the world. It can be naturally collected from Sheep, Lamb and other animals that produce specific fibres for textiles. Aside from clothing, wool is valued for its exceptional properties that enhance sleep quality.
Our mattresses, pillows, bedding and other products use a variety of wool fibres cultivate and collected in places such as Argentina and the Netherlands. The wool is cultivated without chemicals or pesticides, nor is it processed with bleach or harsh chemical de-greasers. The sheep roam free for the majority of the year, and are gathered for shearing (their haircut) only a couple of times each year. This produces a more coarse wool that has more spring and resilience than other wools.
Benefits of Wool: Naturally flame-retardant and able to retain up to 35% of its own weight in moisture, while wicking the moisture away to remain dry. Great insulator and temperature regulation (warm up, cool down). It is naturally anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-allergenic.
Organic Cotton
Cotton is another very popular fabric that has been relied upon by people across time. It can be soft, durable and healthy for the skin, which is the largest organ in the human body.
Many of our products, from the mattress encasements to pillows, bedding to throws, cotton is a primary ingredient, especially in the external fabric. While cotton comes in many different qualities and weave-types, we tend to focus on Pima Cotton and Egyptian cotton as they are long fibres that can be worked into soft and luxurious products. Our cotton is prized for it’s purity and breathability, and is grown without the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals, nor chemically bleached during the processing.
Benefits of Cotton: Soft, supple and breathable. It is durable and natural for the human body, without concern for negatively effecting the skin. It is hypoallergenic and works well with wool for moisture control. Cotton is a versatile, natural material that is strong enough to last, while also being a sustainable crop.
FSC Natural Wood
Many companies have gotten away from using wood to build their furniture and bed frames, opting for man-made, synthetic materials, such as plastics. There is not only a downside health-wise, but environmentally. Being in Canada and working with Canadian manufacturers, we are very lucky to have a thriving lumber industry. We make use of spruce and poplar in our mattress foundations and many of our furniture pieces. Maple is also another common wood that we use. These wood-types are durable and strong, but are also relatively lightweight.
Benefits of Solid Natural Wood: It is a renewable resource that is abundant, resilient and durable. Products made from wood are non-harmful and can actually capture carbon emissions. Above all, they last a very long time and look exquisite. Wood is the perfect support for an organic mattress and is anti-microbial.
