Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning “finger pressure”. It is a ‘hands on’ treatment used both as a compliment to conventional medicine and as a preventative therapy. Shiatsu treatment implies the application of manual and digital pressure to the surface of the body. It is effective in increasing the body’s energy level by regulating the function of internal organs, and improving one’s health by enhancing the body’s natural healing ability, thereby maintaining and preventing the progression of disease. With shiatsu, assessment and therapy are combined, which enables the therapist to detect irregularities and determine an appropriate course of treatment.
Shiatsu affects the superficial and deep tissues through the fascial, muscular, nervous, osteoarticular, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, and craniosacral systems. Shiatsu pressure on the body helps to move toxins that have become stagnant with lack of use, injury or disease. This produces a rejuvenation effect at the cellular level, enhancing cell function and increasing cell metabolism.
Connective tissue when manipulated by compression loosens the molecular bonds of basic components of the cells, and this makes it possible for Shiatsu to free up and rebalance myofascial structures. With injury, there is sometimes joint imbalance related to muscle and fascial strains that cause pain and discomfort long after the trauma heals. Shiatsu helps to improve muscle tone and eliminate restrictions in joint movements.
The founder of Shiatsu Therapy, Tokujiro Namikoshi-Sensei is most responsible for the world wide recognition and development of this therapy. A gifted healer, from the age of seven, he intuitively and successfully treated his mother who suffered of rheumatism using only his thumbs fingers and palms to apply pressure to her body. His continuing studies lead him to the establishment of an anatomical and physiological theory of Shiatsu, and he further developed his theory at his school. As a result of continued presentation and acknowledgement of his work, in 1964 the Ministry of Health in Japan recognized Shiatsu as a uniquely Japanese therapeutic treatment.
